First connector coronary bypass in Massachusetts

Posted on: 04/30/2009

Baystate cardiac surgeon Dr. Daniel Engelman recently performed the first total connector coronary bypass in Massachusetts, using the Cardica® automated system to connect the bypass graft to the heart and aorta. The Cardica® anastomosis system automates the connection of blood vessels during coronary artery bypass surgery, replacing handsewn sutures, which are more time consuming and can be difficult to perform, especially in small coronary arteries. Patients with small targets and diminished cardiac function may benefit from this technique without the need to use a heart/lung (cardiopulmonary bypass) machine. The pioneering procedure may shorten surgery, which can reduce the risk of infection, bleeding and damage to other organs and allow for earlier hospital discharge.
